Recently I was sent a homemade format for creating random teams.
Love it! All such things goes on The Bench.
I hope I’ve got all the rules correct, and I hope I’ll be corrected if I didn’t 😀
Decide beforehand which squaddies are available, for example you can play only with major guilds or only minors, or most likely you will include the only ones that you and your opponent own and/or have access to 😉
Number all available Squaddies (not captains or mascots) from 1 to X.
Some will be in pairs! Assign these pairs before numbering. For example Hook & Crook or Avarisse and oGreede needs to be paired.
The guys who sent the format also recommends that you assign all/most Farmers and Blacksmiths as pairs so that you get fair combinations of Reapers+Planters and Masters+Apprentices.
Take turns rolling to see what squaddies you and your opponent gets from the list. Both should get no more or less than 4 squaddies in total.
Any “random number generator” app or online works fine for this, because there are no real dice for some of these high and uneven numbers. Otherwise you solve it as you see fit with grouping them or the like, if you want to use real physical dice.

Then number all available guilds and roll once for each player what guild that player can choose a mascot from to go with their 4 random squaddies.
After that, select one captain each to go with your respective teams, from any that are available!
Really fun evaluation process to figure which captain works best with what you’ve got.
Some additional rules came along:
1. Each team has every guild ruled needed to use the players in it, like beer tokens and ball of light and so on. Decide together before kickoff what rules are in effect.
2. If an ability is referring to a specific Squaddie model that is not on the team, that’s sad news.
3. Exception to the above; if an ability is referring to a Captain or Mascot, it applies instead to the captain/mascot that is on your team.
4. If you roll a squaddie pair when you have 3 squaddies already, you must reroll that roll.
5. Captain vGreede can only be chosen as captain if you rolled the Union for your mascot choices.
