This rules variant was a trial a some years ago, to see if it would be good for incorporating into the base rules of the game. It makes for a bit more swingy and unbalanced games though, which is why it only remains today as a casual variant to try for fun.
Makes for quicker games as well, so there’s that, and evaluation of strengths and weaknesses becomes very different. It is great to shorten casual games and bring out interesting first turns!
