A while back discord user Aos did some awesome internet detective work, and found the old lore pieces on the Blacksmiths.

Cinder was the one who found Furnace, impaled with his own sword. She’s confident that it was done by someone else within the Guild.
She’s angry on two counts, firstly at the death of her master, and also because she was ready to undergo the trial to become a master herself, but with the death of Furnace she no longer has someone to represent her and is subsequently stuck. She has resolved to stay with the guild intent on finding his killer. The sword she carries across her back is the one that killed Furnace.

This is a real gem, because I’d forgotten that we’d talked about this publically also…
So, congratualtions, Blacksmith fans – Furnace is canonically dead after all.
He was a difficult one, because Russ went rogue and sculpted that model without discussing it with me at all, so when it went live there was a real… “Wait, what? How did that happen?” moment.
