Last wednesday the guys at the Free Cities Sports Network released another podcast episode, and it’s a really good one – especially for sending to friends and new aquaintances that are just getting into Guild Ball!
Some thoughts about the episode below, but first of all the link to the podcast.
Also as usual embedded player for those who prefer that:
This episode tackles the various gameplay strategies as divided between scoring goals and taking out opponents. First guild to 12 VP wins the game, so how to achieve it?
FCSN here also dives into putting each and every guild into one of these strategy categories; a simplified overview of what style each guild feels like being closest to.
In reality it can’t really be simplified this much with any true accuracy, as each guild have so many options and especially vary a lot depending on what captain you play with your guild. Buuut (and the guys in the podcast say this several times as well) the point of this is to give a generalised overview, and I’m so here for it!
I think it’s super good to have these kinds of simplifications that can then be expanded on when delving deeper and learning more about each guild, and over time getting better at the game. Just having these in the back of your mind or in easy access on prone/tablet/printed can be a good general reminder.
Look, they also made this list out of the results! (click to enlarge)

This is exactly the type of thing that some old foxes will scoff at – and either disregard or want to discuss at length. But I love the fact that this doesn’t deter the FCSN guys from making it anyway. I really like these kinds of things, and I absolutely can’t imagine that FCSN and me are the only ones.
Bring more of this!
I think in tandem with the great summaries of guilds’ strengths and weaknesses written by Isvan that I posted about here, this overview by FCSN gives newer/returning players a lot to go on in terms of what to expect from each guild. Both for playing with them and against them.
Also I want to note that I greatly appreciate that people who feel like “new” players make this kind of content together. Not that there haven’t been other content creators like them through the years, but those aren’t around nowadays and I really like what FCSN has released so far.
For me as a player in a similar position of not being a veteran by any means (sure I started long long ago, but I probably haven’t even played as many games as the FCSN guys have during the last year) this is top GB content, a comfortable companion while driving from work or walking the dog.
I do so so hope that these guys find a level they’re comfortable with and stick around so they don’t burn out on this project.
I really hope others enjoy it as well!
The audio is maybe a bit low, but overall obviously I absolutely recommend the episode. It’s a good long one, kept me coming back over a couple days to finish. Love it.
Give it a listen!
Big big shout out to Glasswalker80, Clinton and CaptKaty for all the work you guys are putting into making a new podcast for the rest of us to enjoy.
