What are major and minor teams?
Who can play for whom?
Are there different teams within guilds?
Such questions are common and understandable when you’re new to Guild Ball. This will be very briefly explained below, to help new players out when deciding what guild and what characters are the most tempting to acquire and play with.
There are 11 Major guilds and we’re going on 11 Minor guilds, with each Minor being attached to one of the Majors. There are still 3 Major guilds which haven’t gotten their Minor guild created yet, but 8 are here and the 9th is most likely being released during 2024.

Major: Alchemists
Minor: Lamplighters
Major: Butchers
Minor: Cooks
Major: Engineers
Minor: Miners
Major: Farmers
Minor: Shepherds
Major: Fishermen

While all the major guilds are being sold in two different premade sets from Steamforge Games, there is no limit to what players can be chosen from within the same guild. Remember that a 6 player team always consists of 1 captain, 1 mascot, and 4 squaddies. But as long as you stay within those boundaries, you can bring any 6 players from your guild to the pitch for a match.
Crossover Models
In each major guild there are 2 players that can also play for their connected minor guild. Those models are called playdown crossover models. In the same way, each minor guild have 2 players that can also play for the connected major guild. Those are called playups, or playup crossover models. This means that there are 4 crossover players for each connected guild pair. The card below is a good example, Harry the Hat can play for both Order and Union.

You should absolutely have a look at https://guildball.app/#/library where all the character cards are both easy to access online and free to print.

Looking back
We are at Season 4 now, and a lot has happened since the first release of the original Season 1. The original guilds were Fishermen, Butchers, Alchemists, Morticians, Engineers, Masons, Brewers, and Union.
Back then each guild only had 8 models. And the Union was sort of Minor Guild to all the others, and each guild could take 3 specific of the union players.
So we’ve come a long way! 🙂
