I recently had the opportunity to teach this great game to a friend who hasn’t played before.
We had only brought a warmachine-playmat, and quickly realised that I had no quick easy way of step-by-step measuring where the lines for Guild Ball should go.
Some people know this by heart of course, but I didn’t. That’s why I thought that this might be a good post, useful to other enthusiastic ballers who don’t have a mat and aren’t sure about the sizes and lines π
I also saved this as a PDF that you can find at the bottom here, so you can save it on phones or clouds and so on, for easy access.
- Start with measuring and marking 3x3ft (3 square feet) for the full play area.
When using the term “the edges” below it’s referring to the opposing edges with the players facing each other. The side edges have no additional markings. - Measure and mark halfway between the opposing players for the halfway line.
That is 18″ (eighteen inches) from one side of the pitch. - Measure and mark goal line at 6″ from the edges.
- Measure and mark deployment line at 10″ from the edges.
- Place a goalpost at the center of each player’s goal line, with the front of the goalpost touching line and the rest behind it. Tip: measure 18″ in from one side to find the center.
A goalpost is on a 50mm base. Use anything of equivalent size if you don’t have a goalpost.
Done!
Now you’re ready to start the game π
The rounded line behind the goal line as often seen on official playmats have no technical function, it’s just to look good π
The term “pitch” is most commonly used in British English to describe an “outdoor playing area” for various sports. Although the surface of a pitch is usually grass, it can be composed of any number of materials, including sand, clay, gravel, or stone.
